TL;DR
- An app teardown has revealed that the Pixel Watch could be supported on Google Fi.
- This would make it the first smartwatch to be supported by the carrier.
Google announced the Pixel Watch earlier this year, and there’s plenty to know about the watch ahead of its proper launch later this year. However, some code sleuthing has revealed that the new smartwatch could support Google Fi too.
9to5Google dug into version 69 of the Google Fi app, finding multiple references to a product code-named Rohan. Of course, this is the code name for the Pixel Watch. The outlet suggests that you’ll therefore be able to either buy the smartwatch via Google Fi or add a previously acquired watch to your Google Fi plan.
The outlet also discovered that you’d be able to buy insurance for your Pixel Watch, in line with other devices bought via Google Fi. This suggests that you’ll indeed be able to actually buy the watch via Fi.
It’s unclear whether the upcoming watch would only support a data-only SIM or if it’ll support a full-fledged SIM and plan. The latter would give you a phone number that can be used for making/receiving calls on your watch.
It would nevertheless be the first time Google supports a smartwatch on Fi, although it definitely seems long-overdue in light of smartwatches offering LTE connectivity for years now. So here’s hoping the carrier offers some level of support to other Wear OS 3 devices.
