How to Add the Copyright Symbol to a Document on Windows and Mac

Insert the copyright symbol on Windows by pressing Alt+0169 on a numeric keypad. Or, press Windows+. to use the emoji keyboard. On Mac, press Option+G on your keyboard. You can also use the emoji keyboard on Mac by pressing Control+Command+Space.

The copyright symbol (©) hints to others that something is protected by copyright law. While neither Windows nor Mac keyboards have a dedicated key to quickly insert the copyright symbol, there’s a keyboard shortcut for both operating systems.

How to Make a Copyright Symbol on a Windows PC

The quickest way to make a copyright symbol is to use the Alt Code.

Note: You can only use this shortcut if your keyboard has a numeric keypad, which is usually to the right of the keyboard. You can’t use this shortcut with the numbers at the top of the keyboard.

Place the cursor where you’d like to insert the copyright symbol. Press and hold the Alt key and then press “0169” using the numeric keypad. Once you release the Alt key, the copyright symbol will be inserted.

If your Windows PC doesn’t have a numeric keypad, you can use the emoji keyboard instead. Press Windows+. to open the emoji keyboard.

Then, type “copyright” in the search box and click the copyright emoji to insert it.

How to Type a Copyright Symbol on a Mac

On Mac, you can use a keyboard shortcut that doesn’t require a special numeric keypad.

First, place the cursor where you want to insert the copyright symbol. Next, press the Option+G keys on your keyboard.

You can also use the emoji keyboard to insert the copyright symbol. Press Control+Command+Space to open the emoji keyboard. Then, click the “Next” icon (two right arrows) in the menu bar at the bottom.
